Geo News from Adventuretom (Tom Calhoun)

I haven't been hunting at all, but I still maintain all of my caches. Most of my caching friends (The Mariner, CasherTom) have left the sport, but my dad (TopCat) is still active and as always "B and E" carry the torch for all of us. Pizzaman we miss you!

"Lara's Vacaction" my fifth year anniversary cache is on the way. There is a NEW collectible tag (limited quantity) for this cache.

June 2006 - Worked on "Hat Trick" for Top Cat (my dad). It's a bit easier also.

May 2006 - Quite a few updates to "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark." It's easier, in an Adventuretom kind of way.

May 2006 - Attended Eswau's Meat and Meet cache event. It was well attended and fun, but no one from the old days (except Top Cat) was there. BgSkier, B and E, CasherTom, Mariner, Kazoo and others. It's just not the same without those guys around.

April 2006 - "Lara's Tomb" has a new container.

December 2005 - Some new updates to Santa's Lost Toy Bag . This cache may be my favorite of all my caches.

Another recent cache is The Wind Blows Through Time. Located in Beautiful Blowing Rock.

My out of state cache is Crockett's Wilderness Adventure. This is a nice hike on the trails betwe en Disney's Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness.

I now have an email list which we use primarily to announce our events and sometimes to talk about cool caches we have discovered. If you would like to join, go to the bottom of this page, enter your email address and click the JOIN NOW button. It's low volume, but I use it to announce updates I make to my caches and sometimes others chime in.

Thanks to everyone that has asked for the Geocaching Carolinas logo. Others in the Carolinas that would like to use the logo, drop me a line and I can send you a hi-res version for making stickers, labels etc. The logo was created for anyone to use, so please ask for it and use it! I also have a camo version as an alternate to the original blue.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark was unveiled May 16th at the meeting of The Carolina Geocachers. This cache featured a collectible tag that glows in the dark.

The Mystery of the Birkhead Ghosts, was unveiled at the Birkhead Bonfire event. Here is the tag art for Birkhead Ghosts.

Here is the art from the exclusive Carolinas Geocache Picnic tag from September 30, 2001. You had to be there to get one.

In addition to the 9 collectible tags listed below, there was a tag for the first Geocaching event in September 2001 and a special tag created for the Ringo Starr edition of Octopus garden. That makes a total of 11 tags in the series, three of which (Dragons Secret, Octopus Garden, Geo Picnic) are no longer available. As far as I know Botrytisfree, Erwinia , The_Mariner and Brown Eyed Girl are the only ones with 10 tags. Anyone else? No one has all 11 yet. It takes a trip to Florida, to do that.

The Geocaching Carolinas logo was created by a friend of mine, Daryl Williams, who also happens to be an amazingly talented graphics artist. I use the Carolinas logo on the back of my trading cards and on the location tags* for my multi-caches. Others in the Carolinas that would like to use the logo, drop me a line and I can send you a hi-res version for making stickers, labels etc. The logo was created for anyone to use, so please ask for it and use it!

*For my multi caches I created laminated tags that attach to tree branches. They contain coordinates and a clue to the next step of the cache. They are weather resistant and pretty much permanent if not removed. These laminated luggage tags are attached to a tree branch with a plastic wire tie.

All of my caches are rated using the Geocaching Rating System written by Scott Thomason (brokenwing). This is a great little software package. Thanks to Scott for writing it and all of the Geocachers that made ratings suggestions in the forums.
